Genius Hour: Learning Typing
Week 4: Expect the Mutiny
November 13, 2018
I feel that my daily practice in typing has helped me achieve the goal of learning the home row keys while I am getting more confidence in my typing skills. Something that makes me feel good is that I am getting more accuracy on my typing. Now I know where the letters are on the keyboard and started using the home row keys to learn each finger ’s position. Additionally, I have been working on the index, middle, ring and pinky’s finger exercises. Here is the record of the completion activities from the RARATYPE for this week:
One tip that I have learned is that the typing posture is very important. Sitting properly while I type has helped me keep my mind and hands focused on practicing typing in the correct way. When my body is leaning towards the monitor, with my back straight and my hands on the keyboard, my concentration increases and my miscues are less. Here is some information obtained from the RARATYPE website regarding sitting posture for typing:
Do you have a trick to help you typing effectively? I’d like to hear about it in the comments below.
Clara,
ReplyDeleteI admire your dedication. I learned typing on the keyboard in high school ( a few years ago, wink-wink). As much as I type, for as long as I have been using a keyboard, I don't think I ever get 100% accuracy. I probably have better accuracy when I type short sentences or paragraphs. Also, long nails get in the way! Keep up the good work!
This is a great Genius Hour project that will definitely benefit you in the long run! Reading your post sent me back to high school with the Sisters of St. Francis walking up and down the rows watching our posture, fingers, and eyes. While my speed and accuracy are not like they use to be; my fingers NEVER leave the home keys!
ReplyDeleteTyping is awesome! I have a hybrid style, but I do use the home roe keys. I have a Microsoft Ergonomic keyboard that is split down the middle. It forces you to use the proper fingers (or at least the proper hand!) because it is too far to reach. I have not been typing as much of late, so I disconnected it. Still, I think it did help me to transition to looking at the screen instead of the keyboard.
ReplyDeleteI used to do a lot of work with students and voice typing. One of the things that I learned is that many students did not have a clear chain of thoughts in their mind that they could communicate into written words, even with the voice typing in place. I do not think that typing will ever be exceeded as a way for people to efficiently write a large quantity of words with style and precision.
