Assessing and Improving Student Achievement with Technology - Online Rubric

The 4th-grade students will create a digital historical fiction book report by using screencasting. An online rubric tool is available for helping students know the expectations of the project. I am including this assignment as an artifact because it is a great example for demonstrating that through this tech-based project, students will be able to develop learning skills such as tech digital skills, keep on topic, summarize important events, and evolve oral media presentations.

In reference to the project, the teacher will provide a list of books for students for their screencasting presentations. Students will be responsible for following a study guide that will be revised periodically by the teacher with the purpose of providing feedback and support students’ screencasting projects. Students also will share with their peers, twice a week, regarding how their projects are progressing and getting suggestions from their peers on how they can enhance their screencasting presentations. After each screencasting presentation, students will also reflect on their own and each other’s presentations by providing feedback on something that was extremely well-done and something that could have been done better. This project will be completed in a period of three weeks.

Regarding the rubric, the rubric for this project was inspired by the RubiStar and iRubrics websites in which contains a variety of online rubrics for tech-based projects. For this particular project, you can find the online rubric on Screencasting-Historical Fiction Book Report Rubistar.4teachers. This rubric was meant to grade the process of developing the project and its final product, the screencasting. On this rubric, students will be assessed for planning, content and the screencasting features such as video and sound quality. The free digital tool, RubiStar, helped me to make learning easier and more efficient for students.

In sum, the tech-based projects are more affordable than before with the integration of the technology in the classroom. Along with this, online rubrics are not only useful for teachers, they are useful for students as well.  Rubrics allow teachers to create criteria for assignments on school projects. Rubrics establish what is expected of the student to integrate assignments in order to get a particular grade.

  1. Your rubric is a representation of the quality of work you did during the class. This rubric will guide students to success with the content and the digital storytelling aspect of the assignment.
